What is the CerMark Process?
The CerMark process utilizes marking materials, or “inks,” available in various forms, which are applied to surfaces to be marked. The ink is then selectively fused – using patented laser marking technology - to the surface with a regular industrial marking laser. Finally, any excess ink is easily cleaned from the surface. The inks are scientifically formulated to make a permanent, chemical bond to surfaces, without compromising or damaging the material being marked.

What type of laser should I use?
In the CerMark process, the marking materials are selectively fused to the surface being marked – using patented technology – with a regular industrial laser marking system. These systems generally consist of a laser in an enclosed marking chamber, with additional electronics and computer software for precise control of beam activation, power levels, and movement over the surfaces to be marked. These laser marking systems are readily available and widely used in today’s marketplace.

For the most part, laser marking systems incorporate one of three types of lasers:
  • CO2 Lasers
  • Nd: Yag
  • Fiber

How much contrast can be achieved?
Given proper set-up of the marking process, particularly the settings of the fusing laser, the visual contrast of marks made with the CerMark process is moderately high to very high. The contrast somewhat depends upon the exact marking situation, especially the surface of the material being marked. In some circumstances, the CerMark black marking materials produce marks appearing as dark grey. Some experimentation and adjustment may be appropriate to obtain the highest contrast for the marking situation.

What resolutions can be produced using CerMark?
The particles in the CerMark marking materials, or inks, are very fine, so the spatial resolution of the resulting marks is largely determined by the fusing laser beam’s spot size. With appropriate laser settings, the CerMark process produces resolutions up to approximately 2,500 spots per linear inch, or about 1,000 spots per linear centimeter - comparable to high-quality typesetters and printers. However, the laser beam’s spot size varies inversely with the time required to scan and fuse a given mark, so higher resolutions are achieved at some cost in increased fusing time.
